The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has branded the Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr Fayemi Kayode, as a touted technocrat that cannot truly represent Ekiti People because he had no electoral value across the entire Yoruba land.
Tinubu who made the remark recently through a public commentator, Dr Adamolekun, in an article published in The Nation titled; Buhari: Beware of Ekiti failure, called on the President-elect Muhammadu Buhari to note that the APC Fayemi destroyed in Ekiti State actually brought him to power without him (Fayemi) delivering the State.
Tinubu stated, “Let Buhari start thinking beyond 2015 by realizing the importance of taking serious people that truly can be considered as technocrats and genuine beneficial politicians.
- “Fayemi, a failed politician and ilk could not sincerely be counted among this class.
“Let us ask Fayemi whether it is part of the political strategy of a technocrat during electioneering to give his commissioner paltry N150 and SSAs miserly N50, 000 to be used to galvanize support at the local level during his election when his own promoter spent billions before he assumed office?
“What hypocrisy! This is why it becomes laughable whenever Fayemi goes around parading himself as Head of the Directorate for Policy, Research and Strategy of the APC Presidential Campaign.
- “For goodness sake, what correct policy, research and warped strategy can this failed Ekiti former Governor that was mercilessly beaten by Fayose come up with.”
According to reports, Kayode Fayemi’s unprecedented defeat at the Ekiti State gubernatorial polls by the present Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, was as a result of the rift between him and Asiwaju Tinubu.
Pundits expressed worry at the results because it was unprecedented for a sitting Governor to lose in every Local Government.
He lost most wards in his local government to Ayo Fayose. His deputy, members of the House, Senators and Special Advisers were all disgraced in their Local Governments by a man so many believed was connected to the grassroots.
Some pundits have suggested that Fayemi could have been sabotaged to lose to Fayose.
Tinubu had fought hard to get the APC to zone the VP slot to the South West. Ordinarily, there is nothing wrong with that, the problem was that Tinubu wanted to occupy that slot himself, which would have meant that the APC would present a Muslim/Muslim ticket.
Some APC Governors and stakeholders did not like the image the pick would give the party, so they asked Tinubu to shop for someone else. Lagos Governor Babatude Fashola’s name came up, but his religion also knocked him out. At that point, Fayemi seemed like the best choice.
This did not go down well with Tinubu who believed Fayemi was one of those who had kicked against him. Moreover he saw Fayemi as too independent minded.
Did Tinibu sabotage Fayemi? No one can tell for now.
Another school of thought insists Tinubu backed Fayemi even before the election. According to them, it was Tinubu who insisted there should be no primary, which vexed Opeyemi Bamidele, and led to his exit.
They also claim it was Tinubu that was behind what happened to Bamidele in the House or Representatives when he was removed as the leader of the Ekiti caucus.
The latter group pointed to the directive given by Tinubu to the House members to reverse their decision for the sake of peace.
The fight between Bamidele and Fayemi, sources say, further weakened the latter’s already weak structure.
As the rift between the pair widened, Tinubu lashed out at Fayemi saying “It is quite deluding for Fayemi to be alluding to his conspicuous public consumption as achievements.
- “Could it be the pointless billion naira worth of Government House that he built in a State that reeks of poverty that he calls an achievement?
Could it be the unused stadium he built when an old newly refurbished one is in place? Or could it be his abandoned costly entertainment centre in a State known for undying craving and pursuits for educational excellence?
“These, amongst others, are conduit pipes through which billions of Naira were wasted in Ekiti under Fayemi that prompted the people to truly vote him out of power, the Ekiti-gate notwithstanding, because the people would have revolted if the result had not reflected their true wishes in the 16 local government areas of the state.”
