The opposition Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday said the Standing Order amendment scandal rocking the Senate was a plot by the ruling All Progressives Congress to rubbish the leadership of the Senate. The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh, who spoke to our correspondent, said APC was after the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, as the ruling party was not comfortable with their leadership of the Upper House. He said, “Our position is that there is no scandal; there is no forgery; there is nothing. It is trumped-up, cooked-up charge just to rubbish the leadership of the Senate. “The fact that we have the Deputy President of the Senate and the fact that the President of the Senate is not the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, they want to rubbish the leadership of the Senate. “For us in the PDP, we believe there is a limit to lawlessness. There is no way the government, as presently constituted, can make witch-hunt as a policy, as a policy thrust. In two months we have not seen anything; we have not seen the direction of the government, its programmes and policy direction. The only thing they are reeling out is witch-hunts.” The PDP spokesman alleged that the activities of the ruling party had shown that it planned to break the country. Metuh stated that senators should be left to handle their affairs. He noted that members of the Senate should be allowed to enjoy their ‘legislative immunity.” He said the implication was that lawmakers could be arrested for sponsoring bills termed to be offensive. “The moment the Police starts getting involved in the rules and procedures of the Senate, it means the legislature has lost its independence,” he added. Metuh said, “We understand that they want to arrest the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President. We are daring them to try it. If they want to end democracy, they should say it. We also warn them that Nigeria will continue to remain one. The PDP is insisting that Nigeria will remain one and we will do anything for the country to remain one.” Source: The Punch - See more at: http://www.thescoopng.com/they-want-to-arrest-saraki-and-ekweremadu-we-dare-them-to-try-it-pdp/#sthash.slrzBdOF.dpuf
