Nigeria’s Council of State (CoS) has ruled that the 2015 polls will hold on the dates scheduled; following a meeting at the presidential villa, Thursday.
The Council of State is one of the Federal executive bodies established by Section 153(1) of the constitution and is made up of the President as the Chairman, Vice President as the Deputy Chairman, all former Presidents and all former Heads of the Government of the Federation, all former Chief Justices, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Governors of the States, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
The Council is vested with the power to advise the President in the exercise of his duties.
The polls will hold on February 14th and February 28th as scheduled. The CoS said it had turned down the proposal by the ruling party and the Presidency to have the vote postponed.
There have been widespread speculation in the local media that the polls may suffer a shift in dates owing to the inability of the electoral body to dispense millions of voters’ cards to eligible persons.
