No more N4.7bn cars – Senate

The 8th Senate of the federal republic of Nigeria is willing to clean up the battered image of the national assembly accrued through the years and jettison the idea to purchase cars to the tune of N4.7bn, the Senator representing Lagos East, Gbenga Ashafa has said.

Ashafa who heads the Lands and Transport committee in the red chamber disclosed on a ChannelsTv breakfast program SunriseDaily that the contentious amount for vehicles can be jettisoned all together in the spirit of the change mantra of the Muhammadu Buhari led administration.

President Buhari had said during his media chat last week that he will be meeting with the leadership of the national assembly to find a resolution to the humongous sum in the budget allocated for the purchase of luxury cars for legislators.

Ashafa noted during his TV appearance that the senate is ready to listen to the President given Nigeria’s present precarious economic situation.

He said the vehicles were however for oversight functions and added that the 8th Senate is markedly different from its predecessors in that it is ready to go with the consensus of Nigerians on an issue as contentious as the purchase of vehicles during lean times.

Ashafa also said senators didn’t know what brand of vehicles they’ll be getting as the budget details are yet to be made public or sent to the national assembly.
