With Canada planning to phase out around 50 lakh temporary residents by the end of 2025, immigration officials hope that most of these temporary residents will leave the country once their visas expire.
Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller shared this information earlier this week. Out of these 50 lakh visas, 7,00,000 are for international students who are now facing challenges due to the Trudeau government’s recent anti-immigration policies.
Marc Miller stated, “Not all temporary residents will be required to leave. Some will be granted renewals or post-graduate work permits.”
Miller expressed concern about the large number of students applying to immigrate to Canada. He emphasised that the process for expelling fraudulent applicants would be expedited.
Since August of this year, Indian students have been protesting in Brampton against Canada’s changing policies towards international students.
Data from Canada’s Immigration Department shows that as of May 2023, over 10 lakh international students were in the country. Of these, 3,96,235 had post-graduation work permits by the end of 2023, nearly three times the number in 2018.
However, millions of work permits are set to expire within the next year, and students are struggling to secure permanent residency amid strict immigration policies.
Previously, Canada had already reduced international student permits by 35% in 2024. Furthermore, the Trudeau government plans an additional 10% reduction in 2025.
