2019 elections: Bill Clinton cancels trip to meet Atiku, Buhari, gives reasons

Monday, 11 February 2019 22:48 Written by

Former US President, Bill Clinton, has cancelled his trip to Nigeria, ahead of Saturday’s general elections, saying the visit could be “politicized”.

Clinton was scheduled to visit Abuja this week, alongside Baroness Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

The planned trip was facilitated by the Kofi Annan Foundation and the National Peace Committee (NPC).

“Over the course of the last several days, and after various conversations with the different stakeholders, it’s become apparent that President Clinton’s visit to Nigeria has the potential to be politicized in a way that is not in line with the goals of the Committee. Therefore, he will not be travelling to Abuja,” Clinton’s spokesman, Angel Ureña, said in a statement.

Clinton had been set to deliver a keynote speech at a ceremony for the signing of a peace accord by presidential candidates.

He will, however, speak with President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who is standing for re-election, and his main challenger, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the statement added.

Seven-year-old Ethan died after allegedly being punished for not memorising Bible verses

He was being punished for "not knowing 13 Bible verses", it was reported.

Wisconsin couple Timothy and Tina Hauschultz, along with their 15-year-old son, Damian, have now been charged over the little boy's death, Newsweek reported.

Authorities claimed the couple's teen son had kicked and punched the little boy at least 100 times, standing on him while he was face down in a puddle.

Reports suggest the little boy was then buried alive in "his own little coffin of snow", Fox reported.

Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office said: "Ethan had been performing punishment ordered by Timothy which required Ethan to carry a heavy wooden log, weighing approximately two-thirds his body weight, while being monitored by Timothy’s 15-year-old son."

They added: "Over the course of 1-1.5 hours, the 15-year-old hit, kicked, struck and poked Ethan numerous times. He repeatedly shoved Ethan to the ground and rolled the heavy log across Ethan’s chest. He stood on his body and head while Ethan was face-down in a puddle.

"He ultimately buried Ethan completely in snow. Timothy and Tina eventually transported Ethan to the hospital where he was pronounced dead."

The schoolboy died in April 2018 from hypothermia and blunt force trauma to the head, chest and abdomen.

Ethan's mother Andrea Everett spoke out after his death, saying: "When I got there Ethan did not have a heartbeat and his temperature was 23 degrees.

"They worked on him for five hours, giving him CPR the entire time, and still couldn't get a heartbeat. There was no brain activity."

She added: "I want justice for my son, and the person responsible should go to jail for a very long time."

Timothy Hauschultzm 48, has been charged with felony murder and felony contributing to the delinquency of a child along with four other charges.

Tina Hauschultz, 35, was charged with failing to prevent bodily harm and intentionally contributing to the delinquency of a child.

The couple were reportedly the court-appointed guardians for victim Ethan.

Damian Hauschultz was charged with first-degree reckless homicide and six other charges.

The accused were arrested on Friday.

All three are expected to appear in Manitowoc County Court this morning.

Nigerians in United States of America Rally at the Nigerian Embassy, Washington DC.

Thursday, 31 January 2019 04:23 Written by

Nigerians in United States of America in their hundreds from all the nooks and crannies of Washington DC gathered at about noon in a freezing weather to call on the government of Nigeria as well as the international communities at the recent peaceful demonstration held at the premises Nigeria Embassy, along 3519 International Ct. NW, Washington, DC 20008.

Less than an hour into the rally, two police officers approached the organizer: The Executive Director of HOPe Africa of the rally to ask if they were approved, possessed a permit, duration; how long was the rally going to be and if it was peaceful. The reason being that the colossal turnout superseded the approved number and was contained without any issue.

It was also noticed that Nigerians who were at the embassy for consular services joined the demonstration. Among them was a young lady identified as Adeze who agreed to a special request for interview among others. Miss Adeze talked on various burning issues and acknowledged the need for immediate change because of the call from families and relations in Nigeria, asking for money has increased by more than 1000%, owing to lack of enabling environment and corrupt governance.

Naomi and Gangully Abashe became notable at the event, as they volunteered throughout the entire assembly in collaboration with the law enforcement agents. Gangully took some photographs and video while Naomi conducted a couple of interviews.

A letter was delivered at the gate of the embassy for the Nigerian government immediately for consideration; titled: Grant Free, Fair and Transparent Election in February 16, 2019.  Contained in the letter are slogans, that are boldly highlighted on their respective handheld signs, more signs were strategically displayed on the ground. The letter was signed by Prof Isa Odidi, the Director Diaspora Directorate, PDP Presidential Council and the Chairman Committee on Diaspora PDP Presidential Council.

In attendance of the rally are quite several reputable organizations and individuals, amongst which are CISLAC Global HOPe Africa, Nigeria Atiku Diaspora Organization (AtikuDO), Professionals, Nigeria Unite Organization, Atiku 4 Diaspora and PDP USA.

The spokesperson of the event, Engr. Francis John was very pleased with the turnout of print and electronic media at short notice; this signifies the importance of our presence here and the messages we possess, serving as an early warning sign not to disintegrate Nigeria again, thereby causing serious immigration catastrophic upsurge to the Africa Continent.  According to him, the gathering is here present today to join teeming Nigerians, US, UK, EU in reiterating:

    Free and Fair Elections

    Nigeria at a Crossroad

    Stop Hate Speeches

    Fight Corruption Transparently

Grant Election Monitors Full Access & Security

    Stop the Killings

    #TheWolrdisWatchingNigeria

    International Agencies StepUp

Nigeria is Critical to America and the World

This is Africa’s Most Important Election

No Voters Intimidation by the Police

Sign the Electoral Act into Law

Regardless of the government’s positions, suspicious movements, the entire exercise must be based on the following global practices:

Respect for the Rule of Law and the doctrine of Separation of Powers, as enshrined in the Constitution.

Guaranteed independence of all institutions that protect Nigeria’s Constitutional Democracy (e.g. the National Assembly and the Judiciary, as well as INEC, Human Rights Commission, the Ombudsman, the police and other law enforcement and security institutions etc.

Supported by the observance and practice of the tenets of good governance: Responsibility, Accountability, Transparency and Fairness, as well as independence, discipline and social responsibility.

All of these life-threatening, manipulations and hodge-podge conditions to the detriment of rights of Nigerians are not acceptable. Regardless, this must encompass Nigeria’s long-term growth, sustainability and competitiveness, as well as the success of the forthcoming elections in Nigeria.

Invariably, INEC should act independently and be well resourced with the necessary financial, human and material resources to deliver on their mandate effectively. INEC must specifically consider, the lessons from Osun and Ekiti States to ensure avoidance of similar controversies and not to be seen taking sides.

We also wish to specifically highlight the importance of guarding the independence of our Judiciary. All assertions of impropriety should be handled in observance of our laws.

Today’s convergence supports all efforts to combat corruption in Nigeria. We, however, believe that corruption should be combatted without fear or favor. We condemn statements attributed to the leadership of the All Progressive Party (APC) that: “join the party and your sins would be forgiven." This assembly is expected to continue in diaspora at all embassy locations and we encourage others do the same peaceful rallies. Our next locations are the Nigeria Consulate in New York and Atlanta.

Male nurse arrested after woman in vegetative state gives birth

Franklin , The Associated Press

PHOENIX — A nurse who was supposed to be looking after an incapacitated woman at a long-term health care facility has been charged with raping her, weeks after she stunned her caregivers and family by giving birth to a baby boy, Phoenix police said Wednesday.

Investigators arrested Nathan Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse, on suspicion of one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said.

"We owed this arrest to the victim. We owed this arrest to the newest member of our community — that innocent baby," Williams said.

The surprise birth late last month triggered reviews by state agencies and highlighted safety concerns for patients who are severely disabled or incapacitated. It also prompted authorities to test the DNA of all the men who worked at the Hacienda HealthCare facility.

Sutherland, 36, submitted his DNA sample under court order Tuesday and the results came back a few hours later, showing he was a match to the baby. He declined to speak with police and invoked his Fifth Amendment rights, police spokesperson Tommy Thompson said.

Sutherland, wearing a T-shirt, black athletic pants and jacket, appeared in court Wednesday. A Maricopa County Superior Court commissioner ordered him released on a cash-only $500,000 bond. He also must wear an electronic monitoring device.

Defence attorney David Gregan had asked for a lower bond, citing the lack of a prior criminal record. He described Sutherland as a family man with young children who has lived in Arizona since 1993.

"There's no direct evidence that Mr. Sutherland has committed these acts," Gregan said. "I know at this point there's DNA. But he will have a right to his own DNA expert."

Gregan did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Hacienda officials fired Sutherland after learning of his arrest. The company said it was "troubled beyond words." Sutherland had passed an extensive background check.

"Once again, we offer an apology and send our deepest sympathies to the client and her family, to the community and to our agency partners at every level," Hacienda said in a statement.

The 29-year-old victim has been in long-term care since age three and gave birth at the facility on Dec. 29. Employees said they had no idea she was pregnant. As her guardian, the woman's mother was required to submit an annual report to the court that included results of a medical exam.

The case has prompted the departure or discipline of key figures at Hacienda HealthCare, including the CEO. The provider says one doctor who had cared for the woman resigned and another had been suspended.

Earlier stories had described the patient as being comatose or in a vegetative state. But her parents released a statement Tuesday disputing that characterization.

They described her as intellectually disabled because of seizures in early childhood. While she doesn't speak, she has some mobility in her limbs, head and neck. She also responds to sound and can make facial gestures.

The family's attorney, John Micheaels, said in a statement that they knew about the arrest but did not want to comment.

Thompson said he believes the baby has since been released from the hospital. The woman's family has said they will care for him.

Why private, for-profit health care is a terrible idea

Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:29 Written by

Ontario Premier Doug Ford may be planning a two-tiered, profit-driven health-care system, according to the Toronto Star. This is clearly the wrong solution to the health-care woes of the province, and the nation as a whole.

In a letter to Ontario’s 68,000 civil servants, written on Jan. 7, Ford promised to quickly end “hallway medicine” and to adequately fund health care.

There is no question that Ontario’s health-care system needs to improve. But prioritizing care based on ability to pay instead of medical need will only exacerbate hallway medicine and wait times for all but the wealthiest patients.

Private payment increases wait times

2017 ranking of health-care access and quality in 195 countries gave Canada a score of 88 out of 100. That places our health system in the top 10 per cent in the world. Does this excuse inaction in areas where we must improve? Of course not, but it suggests that there are many elements of our current system worth keeping.

Evidence from Australia to Germany and Switzerland demonstrates that private payment increases wait times for the majority of patients who depend on publicly funded services and increases total system costs.

In fact, countries that outperform Canada on global rankings spend more public dollars on health care (80-85 per cent) than we do (73 per cent) and cover a broader range of services.

We don’t need to rely on international experience alone to see the folly of Ford’s privatization scheme. In 2017, Saskatchewan’s auditor general showed that a private-pay MRI program actually increased wait times for scans rather than the promised reduction.

In British Columbia, former premier Gordon Campbell, now a close adviser to Ford, happily allowed private payment and for-profit clinics to flourish. Now the Cambie Surgeries Corporation, a for-profit investor-owned facility, is fighting a constitutional challenge in the province’s Supreme Court to overturn the B.C. Medicare Protection Act.

This corporation seeks to open the doors to a second tier of private payment for medically necessary care, to allow extra-billing in excess of the public fee schedule, and to allow dual practice — so that doctors working within the public system can charge both the government and patients for the very same service.

For-profit clinics cost more

Back in 2000, the previous Ontario Conservative government under Mike Harris awarded a contract to a private for-profit group to deal with a backlog in radiation cancer treatment. The government gave the clinic $4 million in start-up costs and according to a report from the auditor general, treatment at the clinic cost $500 more per patient compared to public non-profit hospitals.

Simply, profit-driven clinics will not keep money in patients’ pockets, one of Ford’s key campaign promises.

Supporters of private payment — such as Ford — argue that it frees up resources and shortens wait lines in the public system. This is false. New doctors and nurses are not created from thin air. The majority of Canadians, who would continue to rely on a public system, would wait even longer for doctors, nurses and others who would be incentivized to work fewer hours in the public system, and more in the lucrative private pay system.

With fewer health-care workers remaining in the public system, it’s no surprise “hallway medicine” would worsen for those left behind.

Medical care must be based on need

There are evidence-based solutions that are better than for-profit care and that will ensure equitable access to care for all of us.

For example, renowned spine surgeon Dr. Raj Rampersaud launched a pilot project in Toronto that decreased the average wait time to see a spine specialist from 18 months to as little as two weeks and decreased the use of MRIs by 30 per cent.

Barbara Pereira speaks about receiving treatment for back pain at one of the Inter-professional Spine Assessment and Education Clinics launched by Dr. Raj Rampersaud. These clinics have drastically cut wait times for treatment.

Another successful example is an “eConsult” project piloted in Ottawa. Built around virtual access to specialists, this reduced the need for in- person consultations by 40 per cent, with specialist advice arriving, on average, in just two days. The fastest response? Six minutes. This program is now available across Ontario.

There are many other examples of how we can shorten wait times to improve access to care, none of which overturn medicare’s fundamental principles of providing care based on need, not ability to pay.

We cannot allow a select few to profit from changes in our health-care system that will negatively impact most of us for generations to come. We need to improve how we organize and deliver our care, and adequately fund the system rather than financially starving and mismanaging it as Ford plans.

Allowing private payment is an overly simplistic solution to a complex problem. And it is wrong.

Ghanaians are the hardest working immigrants in the US, according to a Bloomberg Poll

Monday, 14 January 2019 21:56 Written by

Immigration continues to be a hot-button issue causing debates spanning all over the globe. The argument being made for halting emigration from certain countries include an increase in violence assumed to perpetrated by undocumented persons, low education levels of immigrants and the notion that those who are emigrating from other nations do not assimilate well into American culture.

However, if the U.S. economy is to stay afloat, Ghanaians are amongst some of the best groups to contribute to that cause. According to Bloomberg Opinion, “immigrants from Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana are near the top in both employment-population ratio and higher-education enrollment.”

Accordingly, Ghana topped the list of hardest working people in the U.S. with 75.2 percent followed by Kenya (3rd), Ethiopia (4th), Nigeria (8th) and Liberia (9th).

Bloomberg

The aforementioned is pertinent to discuss because Africans, in particular, are thought to be barbaric, uneducated and non-essential members of American society that come from shit holes. Clearly, this isn’t so.

Delving deeper, according to a report on the work and job skill among immigrant groups in the U.S., Africans are generally more hardworking and highly skilled than immigrants from other parts of the world. Moreover, they are harder working than native Americans.

Bloomberg

The report also found that of the immigrant groups in U.S., Egyptians, Nigerians, and South Africans are among the most highly educated with more than half of their populations over the age of 25 having at least a bachelor’s degree.

The report was produced by Justin Fox, a renowned American financial journalist, for Bloomberg. Fox used the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 2016 to produce his report in response to recent arguments by White House Chief of Staff, John Kelly. Kelly notably said the following about undocumented immigrants:

They’re overwhelmingly rural people in the countries they come from — fourth, fifth, sixth-grade educations are kind of the norm. They don’t speak English, obviously, that’s a big thing. They don’t speak English. They don’t integrate well, they don’t have skills. They’re not bad people. They’re coming here for a reason. And I sympathize with the reason. But the laws are the laws.

Fox believes that the argument about the number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. is overblown and misguided. With 70% of all undocumented immigrants coming from mostly Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, many foreign-born people in the states are documented immigrants. Moreover, this group, Fox says, are highly skilled, hardworking, English-speaking, and ready to integrate into the United States’ “modern society”.

As Fox advises, “Want Educated Immigrants? Let In More Africans. Highly skilled? Check. Hardworking? Check. English-speaking? Check. Ready to integrate? Check.”

Daughters From Hell: Meet Two Evil Sisters Who Shot Their Own Mother Dead

Thursday, 10 January 2019 22:43 Written by
In what will come across as a really shocking development, two sisters have reportedly shot their own mother dead.

Erica Hall and Amariyona Hall

According to a report by the New York Post, a 14-year-old and her 12-year-old sister were arrested for stabbing and shooting their mother to death — a brutal payback after they were punished for trying to run her over with the family car, neighbors and officials in Mississippi, USA have said.

The teen, Amariyona Hall, and her younger sister were taken into custody late Friday after deputies in Pike County responded to the family’s mobile home in Magnolia, where Erica Hall, a 32-year-old mother of four, was found stabbed multiple times and shot once in the chest with a handgun, authorities said.

Emergency workers tried to resuscitate Hall, whose relatives found her bloodied outside her home just minutes earlier, but she could not be saved. Investigators then zeroed in on Hall’s daughters, Pike County Sheriff Kenny Cotton told the McComb Enterprise Journal.

“They found out the daughters — two teenagers, juveniles — allegedly did it,” Cotton said, adding that both girls are scheduled for mental evaluations. “They’re charged with murder and we’re going to apply the law.”

Cotton said deputies reported that Friday’s attack followed an incident days earlier in which the girls tried to run Hall over with the family’s car. That prompted Hall to punish her daughters, leading them to respond with the fatal assault, according to investigators.

“With something like that, she should have made charges and had them arrested then,” Cotton said of the earlier alleged assault.

Neighbors told WAPT that Hall was killed days after taking away her daughters’ cellphones. It wasn’t clear if the mom took the phones away before or after her daughters allegedly tried to mow her down.

Cotton, meanwhile, said he couldn’t make sense of the alleged retribution killing.

“I can’t imagine what’s going on inside their minds to process that,” he told the newspaper. “A mom is a mom no matter what.”

A message seeking additional comment from sheriff’s officials was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Amariyona Hall, who has been charged as an adult, is being held on $150,000 bond at the Pike County Jail. She’s due to return to court for a preliminary hearing Jan. 29 after appearing for a bond hearing Saturday, the newspaper reports.

Hall’s younger daughter, who was not named, remains in custody at the Adams County Juvenile Detention Center.

Hall’s aunt, Robin Coney, said her niece — who worked at poultry producer Sanderson Farms in Summit — initially was attacked inside her residence and managed to stagger outside to take her final breaths.

“She was stabbed in the back,” Coney told WLBT. “The knife was still in her back.”

Coney said the girls denied stabbing Hall, telling her, “Tee Tee, we didn’t do this,” she told the station.

“And I was like, ‘OK, if y’all didn’t do it, where were y’all when the people that was doing it did it?’” Coney continued.

Coney said the killing followed an argument at the family’s home late Friday.

“It was [Erica’s] gun,” Coney said. “It was her car. So they had got it out. So I guess when they were doing all that to her, she was probably trying to get to her gun to fight for her life.”

The girls calmly went to a neighbor’s home after the killing to ask for a ride because their grandmother just died, Coney said. But the neighbor called to confirm that with Hall and got no answer, WLBT reports.

Coney said the girls then walked to another relative’s home as Amariyona Hall’s younger sister, Ebony, went to the home and found her mother lying outside.
